CNN —The husband of Ana Maria Knezevich Henao, a woman who was reported missing while in Spain in February, has been arrested in Florida, the FBI confirmed Monday. Knezevich Henao, 40, was reported missing in February after she failed to meet a friend in Madrid. Around the time she went missing, Rameau said she received a WhatsApp message from Knezevich Henao which read: “I met someone wonderful!! Two people who know the situation told CNN Knezevich Henao initially rented the apartment in Madrid from January 5 to February 5. It says David Knezevich is Serbian and Knezevich Henao is a native of Colombia and a project manager.

CNN —England international rugby player Billy Vunipola has been fined and handed a suspended four-month prison sentence after resisting arrest at a nightclub in Mallorca, a Spanish court said on Monday. He was charged with serious disobedience to an authority and resisting arrest, according to the court sentence document seen by CNN. “The accused admitted that he was in a nightclub in Palma where some police officers came because of a fight,” the court statement said. The 31-year-old also confirmed that he had been charged with resisting the law and had paid a €240 fine. According to the three-page court sentence document, Vunipola admitted that he had not followed police orders and subsequently caused an injury to an officer’s right wrist and hand, requiring medical attention.

In the surprise move, Sanchez said on X that he would announce his decision on whether to remain as prime minister next Monday, in an appearance before the news media. Sanchez said “I need to stop and reflect” about “if I should continue leading the government” or step down. CNN —Former Barcelona and Brazil soccer player Dani Alves was found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman in a Barcelona nightclub and sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison, a Barcelona court ruled Thursday. The Barcelona provincial court, where the trial was held earlier this month, said there was proof that the assault was not consensual, the court press office said in a statement Thursday. Alves, 40, was arrested in January 2023, following the events at a Barcelona nightclub in late December 2022, and he has been held in prison pre-trial since then. A lawyer for Alves, Inés Guardiola, told reporters outside of the courthouse that the former Barça star will appeal the ruling. Alves is one of the most decorated soccer players of his generation, having won domestic titles in Spain, Italy and France.

CNN —Maxim Kuzminov, a Russian pilot who dramatically defected to Ukraine by flying his helicopter across the border, is dead, according to Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Directorate (GUR). A source at Ukraine’s GUR confirmed to CNN the body of the man found in Spain was that of Kuzminov, but would not comment on how he had died. The shooting took place in a neighborhood where some Russian and Ukrainian expatriates have settled since the war began, according to the Villajoyosa city hall press office. When Kuzminov flew into Ukraine, the two other Russian service members on board the Mi-8 helicopter with him did not know what was happening. “I contacted representatives of Ukrainian intelligence, explained my situation, to which they offered this option: ‘Come on, we guarantee your safety, guarantee new documents, guarantee monetary compensation, a reward,’” the pilot said.

CNN —A judge in Barcelona has opened a second investigation into alleged tax fraud by Grammy-winning singer Shakira, a Spanish court said Thursday. Shakira is already awaiting trial for alleged tax evasion of $16.2 million for the years of 2012, 2013 and 2014. The Colombian-born singer, who now lives in Miami, earlier denied the charges of tax fraud relating to the period 2012-2014 through her public relations firmShakira reiterated her innocence on Thursday. In July 2021, a judge at a court near Barcelona ruled that the singer could stand trial for alleged tax evasion. CNN —Italian authorities have issued an “extreme” health risk for 15 cities including Rome and Florence this weekend as a heatwave that is baking Europe threatens to bring record temperatures. The ESA warned that Europe’s heatwave has only just begun with Spain, France, Germany and Poland also expected to see extreme weather, just as the continent welcomes an influx of tourists. In the south, temperatures in the cities of Seville, Cordoba and Granada have reached 40 degrees Celsius, or 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Meanwhile, even the normally mild region of Navarra in the north is seeing up to 40 degrees Celsius. Heat is one of the deadliest natural hazards – more than 61,000 people died in Europe’s searing summer heat wave last year.

CNN —Peruvian novelist and Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa has been hospitalized in Madrid with Covid-19, his son said Monday. “In light of the interest by the news media in our father’s health, we make public that he has been hospitalized since Saturday after being diagnosed with Covid-19,” Alvaro Vargas Llosa tweeted on behalf of himself and his siblings, Gonzalo and Morgana Vargas Llosa. Vargas Llosa lives in Madrid and holds Spanish as well as Peruvian citizenship. Born in Arequipa, Peru in 1936, Vargas Llosa was brought up by his mother until his father reappeared and brought an authoritarian change to his life. As well as the hostile environment at home, Vargas Llosa lived through Peru’s political turmoil, which saw the rise of dictator Manuel Odría in 1948.

There are just three works, among the 650 on display, signed by female artists, Leticia Ruiz, director of the Royal Collections, told CNN via phone. Luisa Roldan's 1692 sculpture “Saint Michael the Archangel Defeating the Devil (El Arcángel San Miguel venciendo al demonio)" will be on display for the first time at the Royal Collections Gallery in Madrid, Spain. The exhibit starts with the Hapsburg monarchs’ royal collections — located near the old city wall exhibit — and then one level below, the Bourbon dynasty collections. On a floor below that are the temporary exhibitions, which start with carriages from the Royal Collections and some on loan from other institutions, Ruiz said. A third of the museum’s 650 items will be rotated annually back to the royal palaces and other Patrimonio sites and replaced with other items from their collections.

Madrid CNN —Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has announced snap parliamentary elections in July, hours after his ruling Socialists suffered major setbacks in regional and local elections. Sanchez, 51, became prime minister in 2018 after winning a vote of no confidence in parliament against then-conservative Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. He formed a coalition government with the leftist Podemos party, which also suffered setbacks in Sunday’s local elections. The prime minister is making “a complex chess move,” Andres Villena, a professor at Madrid’s Complutense University, told CNN. “Sanchez’s decision to move up the elections could neutralize the honeymoon for the incoming conservative leaders” in the local elections, Villena said.

CNN —Authorities are investigating an explosion linked to the deaths of two people in Spain on Tuesday as a “potential case of domestic violence.”The victims, a woman and a man, were found dead near a children’s playground in the northern Spanish town of Orio, Basque regional police told CNN. Police discovered the bodies after being notified of an explosion in the early evening. Police did not immediately say how the explosion was carried out. A bomb squad was deployed, along with officers from the Basque police force, but not a tactical heavily armed squad. The Basque police confirmed to CNN that the photo shows the scene of the incident.
